Chronic Disease (NCD) Awareness Day

How many people do you know suffering from cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol level, kidney, liver or lung disease?

WHO 2018:  Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), including heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes and chronic lung disease, are collectively responsible for almost 70% of all premature deaths worldwide. The rise of NCDs has been driven by primarily five major risk factors:

  • tobacco use
  • unhealthy diets
  • physical inactivity
  • the harmful use of alcohol
  • environmental influences

While low and middle income countries are affected the most, due lack of preventive health education, early detection, access to clean water and food, pollution or un-safe and clean work practices, NCD’s are on the rise in high income countries as well despite sufficient access to basic needs, education and health care services.

As all of the major risk factors can be controlled and eliminated by making individual choices, early prevention is the only way to go to get the NCD epidemic under control and safe you a lot of money and pain in the long run.

 

Active Prevention – Why is it so difficult to communicate this message?

The research in behaviour economics shows that people tend to give in to immediate rewards despite consciously knowing that their lifestyle choices will likely harm them along the road.

People operate on a present bias; they focus on today, maybe next week but not years ahead or future generations. They tend to be unrealistic optimistic when it comes to their own choices, harm happens to others but not to me. And many just simply struggle with self-control.
